What an absolute awful season for Lithuanian basketball. For a nation that loves the sport so much, the domestic competition has taken a huge hit this year. For starters, Zalgiris is once again atrocious in the Euroleague. The case for two lithuanian teams in Euroleague seems mute as one could argue whether any Lithuanian team belongs in the Euroleague. On top of playing horrible they have their financial mess.
Moreover, Lietuvos Rytas has done absolutely nothing to assert themselves in a situation where Zalgiris looks weak. In an attempt to Lithuanianize the team, they replaced the majority of their foreign talent with average domestic players. The result, early losses to Tartu Rock and ASK Riga. This team is a fraction of the caliber of the Lietuvos Rytas of the past few seasons. The only good news is that this may finally open up the BBL to real competition which it desperately needs. However, I wanted the BBL to become competitive because the other teams improved not because Zalgiris and Rytas regressed.
I had to vent my frustrations about this season, maybe next year will be better. Or maybe Rytas will gift us with a Kareem Rush-esque christmas signing like a few years ago as a reward for putting up with such a joke of a roster.
